Ola from Spain. The trip is going well. Last night we had a very tasty dinner at an outdoor restaurant near our downtown hotel in Madrid. The hotel was in a renovated building, our rooms very modern and comfortable, if not a bit tiny. This morning we struck out, armed with grande sized Starbucks, to see the Palace in Madrid. There are pedestrian only cobbled streets in downtown Madrid that are lined with old architectural wonders filled with shops below what looked to be very cool apartments or hotel rooms. The structure in the photo was adjacent to the Palace and captured the eye with its colors and style. I got in a little trouble with the Policia while standing too close to an open window at the Palace. Touristitos! This afternoon we are on the train to Santiago de Compostela. The terrain near Madrid was semi-arid, but now we are traveling through very lush green areas. Soon all the rides will be done and we will have to unpack our hiking boots. Tomorrow we walk 22 kilometers to Negreira.

Sounds like an adventure already! Looks like you had a fairly long train ride today when I checked it out on the map. Here's hoping your first day 'on the trail' is enjoyable and not overly strenuous. Reminds me of the old 'walkathon' days in Fort St. John - 25 kms on pavement on fairly level ground...hmmm.
